The BBC has marked the end of an era by discontinuing its classified football results service on 5 Live
WTF !!!!!!

The traditional reading of the top flight, football league and Scottish results on BBC Radio goes back decades.

Fans returning to their cars or heading home on the train from matches have been able to listen to the results service on the radio since the 1950s.

But stunned footie supporters were surprised to find no reading of the results on the 5 Live Sports Report programme, the world's longest-running sports radio show.

Following a backlash, the BBC confirmed that since they have acquired the rights to broadcast Saturday evening Premier League matches on 5 Live, they have shaken up the schedule.
A spokesperson for the broadcaster said: "With the addition of the 5.30pm live Premier League match to our coverage, Sports Report has been condensed into a shorter programme.

"We will still offer a comprehensive goal service throughout the day on air and on the BBC Sport website as well as Final Score on BBC One.

"We would like to thank everyone who has read the classified football results on 5 Live over the years."

The announcement sparked outrage from football fans who have spent years looking out for the classified results.

Sparked outrage. Even though 99% of people can check all results online within seconds at any time they want.

I don’t get the outrage.

Nobody watches it anymore, everyone knows the scores instantaneously.

Fond memories of being stuck in football traffic and hearing the results read by James Alexander Gordon.

Outraged? Behave. Everyone knows the results already, and nothing last forever.

On a 23 bus on the way home from Upton Park with loads of people with their Transistor's on... then the music and complete quiet while we listened to the results...

Upton Park was a shithole but it was our shithole without a corporate Box in site.

You have 100% nailed it there Goose.

People don't watch the radio these days, they tend to listen to it.

Years ago, in my childhood, I vividly remember my Maternal grandfather, pencil at readiness, waiting for the intro music to finish so that he could take down the results in order to check them against his “pools” coupon.

All that has long gone and it’s no surprise that the BBC has stopped the weekly 5pm readings. The era when every game ended at ten to five on a Saturday has long passed and people’s access to the results, the reality that generally only half the EPL games were played, have served to reduce the number of people listening greatly.

So good luck to the BBC for finally shutting the door on something that began to change nearly a generation ago.

Not diversified enough probably, far too white a service

The BBC becomes increasingly pointless as it becomes less of a public service and mimics private broadcasters who are required to make a profit.

A tiny fraction of people were ever interested in the Arbroath result but the BBC, unencumbered by commercial demands was able to spend time broadcasting their results because they are a ‘public service’.

No one is thinking of the elderly or disabled who still use a radio, this is just another cheap shot from the vile BBC.

It's funny HIGNFY is still going, especially when it hasn't been funny for the last 20 years.

Mentioned on the Saturday Football thread that I think they will be forced to backtrack.
I know its old fashioned and the number of Saturday 3pm's has reduced but many people listen as they get into their cars after ATTENDING matches so shouldnt be fiddling with their phones.
Hopefully when it returns Charlotte Green the Spurs supporting incumbent will have been redeployed to read out recipes on Womans Hours and a voice of the appropriate TIMBRE similar to James Alexander Gordon will be used.

I haven't listened to radio 5 sport in donkey's years. Do they still do the "sports report" music at 5pm? Part of my childhood memories when that came on radio 2.
